| TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES FOR SCHOOL PERSONNEL |
"I am who I am" is a kit that aims at developing awareness around the subject of sexual orientation of adolescents. It is estimated that about 10% of the population is homosexual. Adolescence is a difficult time for youth who are questionning themselves about their sexual orientation. Isolation and the non-acceptance of others make this group particulary at risk of developing addiction problems, of becoming victims of harassment and abuse and even of suicidal ideation. Awareness is a way to counter the violence and non-acceptance. It also aims at breaking the isolation of those who are questionning themselves and help our youth in their personal growth.
This kit was developed for groups of students from 14 to 18 years of age, to be used in personal growth classes. It contains 6 modules developed to help school personnel who teach the subject of sexual orientation to their students. It aims at educating and to revise the different myths that circulate amongst youth. With the help of a 27 minutes video documentary, written testimonies and guided discussions, students will have a larger view of sexual orientation. They will be brought to distinguish between the terms sexual identity, sexual orientation and sexual roles. Prejudice, isolation, acceptance and available ressources are some of the themes that are more specifically related to homosexuality. This kit does not pretend to answer all questions. It is a tool that can facilitate discussion. It is up to you to transform it and to be inspired in order to guide your students in their quest for answers.
